THREE FIELDS brought together artists, cultural organisations, and facilitators based in the UK, India, and South Africa to explore how digital artistic practice can be rethought through the lenses of sustainability, access, and international co-creation. Emerging as an extension of an earlier work developed through The Networked Condition, THREE FIELDS created space to test new ways of working translocally, without physical co-location.
Abandon Normal Devices (AND) is a radical arts organisation, situated in the North of England and working globally. AND is renowned for producing the UK's only nomadic, site-responsive digital arts festival, commissioning works which combine creativity, technology, and science, challenging norms and fostering critical dialogue through immersive experiences grounded in ethics, sustainability and inclusion. Since 2009 we have commissioned and supported hundreds of artists to push the boundaries of their creative practice, by making space for provocation, risk-taking, and experimentation that enable new artforms to emerge.
Unlikely communities in unusual spaces, imagining the unknown. Unbox Cultural Futures builds community at the intersection of disciplines to explore new narratives and reimagine India’s plural futures. Conceived in 2011 as a festival for inquiry and exploration, UCF has since evolved into a dynamic ecosystem of labs, public engagement platforms, research projects, art, installations, and publications to explore new narratives for cultural enquiry and expressions. UCF brings together diverse practitioners – artists, researchers, designers, and communities to co‑create spaces of inquiry and expression.
Fak'ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival is held annually in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is a celebration of young, Pan-African talent in the digital sphere, showcasing and developing skills in technology, art, and culture. The festival is a collaboration between Wits University's Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and the Wits School of Arts' Digital Arts Department. In 2025, Fak'ugesi is not just an event but a movement, activating the ecosystem as a living network and connecting people through digital storytelling, new media arts, and more.
Fast Familiar are a digital story studio, an award-winning interdisciplinary collaboration comprising expertise in theatre, facilitation and creative computing. Fast Familiar make artworks which are participatory, playful and political. FF’s portfolio mixes ‘studio-originated’ projects realised within the arts and culture sector; and more ‘applied’ projects, where we are commissioned to create research and public engagement tools for partners in the charity sector, Higher Education or thinktanks.Fast Familiar previously partnered with AND and Arts Catalyst on The Networked Condition project about the environmental impact of digital cultural production, which entailed a series of case studies and a free tool to measure the carbon impact of digital projects.
Arts Catalyst is a visual arts organisation and charity based in Sheffield, UK, enabling people in South Yorkshire and beyond to engage in creative experiences that increase ecological awareness, encourage positive social action and open up new ways of learning about the world around us. We activate spaces for people to think differently about the world around them using art to explore social and environmental issues, provoke debate, and test out alternative ways of learning. We collaborate with artists, activists and people with different kinds of knowledge to organise creative projects that respond to social and environmental issues. Our programme often takes place within community spaces, unusual sites and outdoors.
THREE FIELDS is an international co-comission between Abandon Normal Devices, Arts Catalyst, Fak’ugesi, Fast Familiar and Unbox. Funded by the British Council’s International Collaboration Grants and supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
